Seattle needs a Sun Dial. Not an instrument for telling time, but a dial that we can use to control how much sun pours from the sky; this would be especially useful on weekends. Say, for example, this coming weekend.
BTW, I'm still wondering what it would be like to record one short sketch per day for, say, one year. Okay, how about beginning with one week? Let's find out. Here's sketch number two for this week:
Sun Dial: the first section is cloudy w/ light rain -- followed by a break in the clouds caused by entrance of a giant hand that slowly turns the venture-funded Sun Dial. Eventually, our giant star peeks out and shares its ultraviolet warmth, bringing with it endless frolicking, lawn control, dangerous water sports, Raybans, peeling brown skin, and of course, melanoma. Those with fair skin, duck and cover. (4.7M mp3)

From today's reading:
“At night I used to go to the Jazz Workshop where John Coltrane was playing – modal jazz, with lots of notes and very few changes of harmony. This was the most interesting music for me at that time – by day I was leanring about what I did not want to do, but by night I was learning about something that I did want somehow to work into my life. Student composers at that time were writing enormously complicated pieces, but as Mills didn’t have an orchestra, they weren’t played. You had the feeling that no one was hearing it in their head; no one was playing it on an instrument; it was just paper music. And then at night you see Coltrane playing – and he just gets up and plays. So it was at that point that I decided I must play in my own pieces – whatever my limitations. I must become part of the ensemble.”Writings on Music, 1965-2000, Steve Reich/Paul Hillier
